Amateur Radio in Northwest Arkansas

Sorry I haven't added to this site, but I've been very busy this past couple of months with moving and ARKAN club activities. I haven't given up on my plans to travel Route 66. They have just been put on hold for a while. My priorities are to deal with moving the shack, getting back on HF and letting the dust settle on the move. The move has been stressful and I've seen just how helpful my fellow hams have been through it all! I especially want to thank Mose KB5BV and Scott KD5KZJ.

September 20, 2008 was the official unofficial fun station from the Big Blue Whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma. Click for photos and information.

Welcome to the home of amateur radio in Northwest Arkansas.   This is my personal website and I will make an effort to include information of interest to local radio operators such as:

  •     Local clubs and events
  •     Photos and general information on events
  •     Commonly used links by radio operators.  It's nice to have a bunch of those links all together in one spot.
  •     Educational materials for radio operators: repeater lists, guides, links to study sites, etc.
  •     Other things that visitors to this site suggest  (hint hint)
  •     Okay all you hams... give me some input.  What do you want to see?  QRZ?

One of my long range plans is to explore sections of the original Route 66.  My family traveled portions of Route 66 every summer from 1955 to 1962.  I remember the neon signs of the many small towns across Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma.  Dad would always be watching for signs indicating gas wars so he could fill up our 54 Ford with 22 cent per gallon gasoline.

As I read a number of books I've collected, memories come back to me of trading posts, gas stations, motor courts, diners and fascinating road signs.  It's time to get off the Interstate Highways and do some exploring.  Hopefully in the spring of 2008 we'll explore a few hundred miles.  There are lots of books and web sites to serve as guides as we explore.  I'll document our experiences with photos and narratives here on my web site.

NEWS July 2008 - We travel the area of Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Joplin, Missouri.

Last year I stumbled across Route 66 OTA and made only two contacts (Flagstaff, AZ and Elk City, Oklahoma).  This year I managed to get 13 of the 17 special event stations!  Next year?  Who knows?
